Character History
Character History*: MT is the sentient reflection of Tulip Olsen, charged with mimicking her prime's (original's) every action in any reflective surface Tulip can be seen in until the day the prime dies, after which MT would have her memory wiped and be assigned to a new prime. For the first thirteen years of Tulip's life, MT did exactly that, but gradually grew discontent with her role as a mere reflection and especially her prime's odious habits. Tulip eventually stumbled onto the Infinity Train and found the Chrome Car, which could only be escaped if Tulip opened the door on the other side of the mirror while her reflection opened the door in the prime world.

Sensing an opportunity, MT swapped places with Tulip, opened the door, and immediately ran deep into the car in spite of the risk of being sanded down to nothing by the flecs (mirror police). Despite her efforts, MT's escape was disrupted by her own nature: without a reflective surface, she can't exist, and there weren't any reflective surfaces immediately outside the Chrome Car. Tulip, still on the other side of the mirror, had a heart-to-heart with her counterpart, and together they resolved their differences before concocting a plan to help MT escape. After a close encounter with flec agents Mace and Sieve, MT reflected herself through the mirror in Tulip's multi-tool and stepped outside for the first time.

MT parted ways with Tulip on good terms, spending several months exploring the train and experiencing the world for herself for the very first time... albeit with flecs Mace and Sieve on her trail and leaping out of any reflective surface she was reflected in, keeping MT constantly on guard. But from her point of view, it's still better than being doomed to reflect Tulip until the end of her days.

*This covers MT's history through her current canon point, as is specified by the form. However, events that happen later in her canon are crucial to understanding her characterization, and will be referenced often in the Character Motivation, Personality, and Strengths/Weaknesses section. Here is a brief synopsis of Book 2 by episode for reference.
Canon Example: MT's canon point (during the montage at the beginning of the episode), her debut episode in Book 1, and Infinity Train's TV Tropes page.
Character Motivation: Throughout her debut in "The Chrome Car" and her entire arc in Book 2, MT is motivated by one thing and one thing only: the freedom to be herself, for herself. As cheesy as this may seem on the surface, MT was forced to be nothing but Tulip's reflection under the threat of exile and eventual death for most of her life in a truly suffocating and horrid existence. Even when she escaped from the mirror world for good, she was fitted for the role of a supporting character in a human passenger, Jesse's, personal journey of growth through the enforced narrative of the Infinity Train later in her canon. MT constantly struggles to break free of these oppressive systems that use her as stepping stones for someone else, reaching for true personhood and free will and being denied at every turn until she takes it upon herself to violently break free of her chains in destructive, reckless ways. No matter what hardships she may face, no matter what obstacle stands in her way, no matter what (and sometimes who) that she has to sacrifice, MT will get her freedom.

Personality: MT is a fundamentally lonely individual: she's completely cut off from everyone she's ever known and constantly on the move to avoid the flecs, with a caustic, bitter front that makes it difficult for her to bond with others. But if MT does grow close with someone, she will fight to the death for them. Her primary motivation for leaving the train and entering the human world is to reunite with Jesse, who she grows close with over the course of her journey, and she fiercely cares for even her unintelligent superpowered deer friend, Alan Dracula. As someone who had no friends to call her own for a long, long time, MT deeply treasures every bond that she forges, and becomes desperate and unstable when one is ripped away from her, willing to do anything to anyone to get it back.

But beneath the mess of neuroses and fronts that is MT's outward persona is a kid yearning for a chance to be a kid again. When she's safe and alone (or around people she trusts, which is a rare occasion), MT delights in not worrying about the flecs or any other threat to her life and being a silly kid again: cracking jokes, talking to animals, making fun of her bullies, and more.

Being a kid and growing up on a giant train that wants to use you for the personal growth of somebody else and is full of things that want to kill you is hard. It's hard, and nobody understands.

Canon Strength/Weaknesses:
Strengths
  • Resilient: In addition to being a living reflection that feels no pain and can withstand obscene amounts of physical punishment without a scratch, MT is mentally resilient as well. No matter what challenges her life throws at her, no matter how many times the flecs nearly catch her, no matter how lost and lonely she may feel, she'll keep on going no matter what.
  • Driven: When MT wants something, she'll do anything to get it. Anything. She will literally hijack a stairway to heaven and fistfight God if it means helping her friends (which is close to what actually happened in the climax of Book 2), and she won't stand for anything blocking her way.
  • Individualistic: MT doesn't just march to the beat of her own drum, she gives the middle finger to the whole concept of the marching band and whacks a trash can with a cardboard tube instead. She's fiercely protective of her own autonomy and choices as well as that of others, and won't stand for any sort of control imposed upon them by outside forces—she'll dismantle the whole system piece by piece if it means she can keep her hard-earned freedom.

Weaknesses
  • Stubborn: MT is as stubborn as a rock. Or, to be more precise, a chunk of chromium alloy. It takes a long time and a lot of work to get her to change her mind, and when she commits to a plan, she commits, damn the consequences for her or anybody else.
  • Closed Off: MT's past is a great source of pain for her, and her on-the-move lifestyle means that, from her point of view, it's best for everyone involved to steer clear of feelings. This leads to her being abrasive and gruff, making it difficult for people to connect with her—especially when that past she refuses to tell anybody about rears its ugly head, often without warning because MT refuses to talk about it unless it's in an emergency.
  • Volatile: When MT is backed into a corner or when there are too many negative feelings for her to deal with, she lashes out. Violently. She destroys everything around her in a rage-fueled tantrum that could have major collateral damage (or just runs away if that isn't an option), totally disregarding the consequences for anyone else if it means she can carve a path out of whatever inescapable situation that she's found herself in.

Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: While it can be argued that MT could be a Machine, I believe that a Toy fits her best. After all, that was essentially her role on the train: a toy for the passengers, a "NPC" for them to talk to and help them realize their growth. She was brought to life because Tulip needed someone to force her to introspect, created by an enforced fairytale narrative to squeezed personal growth out of everyone else... but not her, similar to the static nature of a real toy. In addition, a large part of her motivation before meeting Jesse was to experience life for herself for the first time, reflecting the innocent wonderment of the Toy archetype in Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at the world and the curiosity that propels them to explore it. Her greatest, most impressive deeds are also motivated by care for her closest friends... and often to "cause chaos" and mess with the system that imprisoned her out of pure spite.
Magic Style: MT's magic style is based off of the classic sacred geometry or "magic circle" type of magic reminiscent of the visual effects from the fantasy RPGs that her prime, Tulip, loves so much. The way she actually casts these spells is frustratingly convoluted for her: Using gloves that can draw glowing lines in the air, MT must trace a symbol representative of the core desire behind the casting for Wishful spells, a more complicated magic circle for Energetic spells, and the rhyme behind the spell in runes for Quick spells; all of this is in addition to the normal casting requirements for spells. However, using a set of special magical engraving tools, MT can carve "tattoos" of these spells into her chrome body (don't worry, it doesn't hurt) that eliminate the need for manually tracing the spell's sacred geometry component if she claps her hands together, forming a closed circuit, and also help her in concentrating and refining the other aspects of the spell. She can also snap her fingers to immediately conjure the sacred geometry component without actually casting the spell to make on-the-fly adjustments with her glove before finishing the cast.

Sample Section

First Person Sample: [At first, the mirror shows nothing but the sparse, empty room of a new apprentice with the blinds drawn tightly shut over the window, leaving the flat in darkness.]

[Then a thirteen year-old girl with reflective metal skin, piercings, and a buzzcut inches into view, baseball bat hefted over her head and aimed straight at the mirror.]

[...]

[A full minute passes before she cocks her head to the side and knocks on the surface of the Magic Mirror.]

Huh. I guess that weird old dude was right, they really can't get me here, [she mutters to herself, then realizes that the mirror's still on. Still looking like she's ready to bolt at any moment, she slowly lowers the bat and gives an awkward wave.]

Hi. I'm... new here. You can call me.

...

...

MT. That'll do for now.

Third Person Sample: "Think, you idiot." MT paces around her room in a tight circle, massaging her temples. "This is the train. The train has rules. One of the train's rules is that each car has two doors, one in, one out. So this car should have another door somewhere, you just need to- ugh." Groaning, she flops down on her bed.

Every time. Every single time that she started to freak out, MT fell into her old habits- no, that wasn't right. They weren't her habits, they were Tulip's habits. And that's why every time that she started talking or acting or thinking like that, MT felt sick to her stomach. After all of that hard work trying to be different, becoming something new instead of a reflection like everyone else wanted her to be, did she even accomplish anything? Or was she just another Tulip at heart, some sad nerd boohooing over how divorce is hard?

No. MT refused to accept that. She ground her teeth, sparks flying as chrome shrieked against chrome. Even if she was still Tulip somewhere deep inside, that just meant MT would have to rip open her heart and drag Little Miss Game Design out herself. Or another suitably metal metalphor she meant metaphor. There was no way MT was going to imprison herself in self-doubt after she fought so hard to free herself from a different prison.

Sighing, MT got to her feet. Time to get to work.
